Quiet the Noise: How to Hear God When the World Won't Stop Talking

You Were Not Made for This Much Noise

We live in a world that never fully sleeps. Notifications ping at 2am. Social media algorithms are designed to keep your eyes open and your thumb scrolling. Self-help gurus flood your feed with advice on how to optimize your mindset, manifest your desires, and trust your gut.

But here is what no one is telling you: all of that noise has a cost. And the cost is the one thing you were actually designed to hear — the still, small voice of God.

Elijah heard it in the wilderness after his greatest battle (1 Kings 19:12). Not in the wind. Not in the earthquake. Not in the fire. In the stillness. But stillness is something the modern world is not selling.

The Problem with Trusting the Noise

The self-help industry has built an empire on one core promise: look inward, trust yourself, you already have the answers. But the Bible speaks plainly: There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 14:12)

When Jeremiah wrote, The heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9), he was not being poetic. He was being precise. The inner compass our culture tells us to follow? Scripture says it needs to be surrendered, not celebrated.

What Quieting the Noise Actually Looks Like

  • Start your day in the Word before the world. Before you check your phone, open Scripture. What you feed first becomes loudest.
  • Replace scrolling with stillness. Even five minutes of intentional quiet prayer resets your spiritual compass. Psalm 46:10 commands it: Be still, and know that I am God.
  • Question the voices you follow. Does this person point you toward God or toward yourself? The filter matters.
  • Repent of the idol of self-sufficiency. Scripture calls us to trust in the Lord with all our heart, not in our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Peace Is Not Found in Better Strategies

The world's answer to anxiety is a better morning routine. A gratitude journal. A wellness app. These things are not wrong, but they are not sufficient. Paul wrote from a prison cell: And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)

Not the peace of optimized productivity. Not the peace of positive thinking. The peace of God, which is only available to the one who has quieted the noise long enough to actually receive it.
